Chapter seventeen

Laura

The door opened, and I breathed in relief. It was only an elevator. I was feeling light-headed from dehydration after spending all day walking and sweating in that horrendous suit, and the thought of facing an ambush hadn’t left my mind since I almost had to force Akira to accept the other alien’s help.

We entered, and Akira swiped the keycard on a sensor. The walls were decorated with holograms that displayed videos of nature, and the sound of water falling came out of the sound system. He grabbed me by the waist before the doors closed and pulled me to him.

“Brace yourself.”

“What—“

The elevator dropped so fast that my stomach turned, and my insides rearranged themselves. And not in a good way. I held Akira’s torso so tight my arms turned white. I cursed him for not warning me, but was grateful he had caught me before falling. If I had been alone here, I would be sprawled on the floor, praying for my life. This brought back my hatred for roller coasters, and I fought the nausea off. My insides returned to their place, but I wasn’t okay. How could these aliens travel in that and keep on with their lives?

Akira’s hand held me in place when the doors opened, and he stepped out in front of me. I wanted to ask him what he was doing but was unsure if I could speak here. If there were other people around, it would be better if they didn’t know I was female. The fact that I had a bounty on my head almost made me laugh. Me. Little Laura, who never committed a crime in her life, ended up with a bounty on her head in another galaxy. I had to laugh.

He turned back and looked at me. “Are you okay?”

“Yeah… I’ll live,” I said, still trying to keep the contents of my empty stomach inside.

He smiled with tenderness. “Yes, my Lora, you will live.”

The door opened to a dimly lit corridor made from what looked like cement but had a smooth texture. It was empty, so we walked out, and Akira seemed to read the lettering on the wall. I followed him, wishing he would hurry up already. I needed to drink something before I passed out.

He stopped at the door and swiped the keycard over the sensor on the door handle. As he stepped inside the small space, a light came on.

The room was tiny but clean. I walked inside, closing the door behind me, and made a beeline for another door that I assumed was the bathroom. And I was right.

“Are you okay, Lora?” I heard Akira ask, his footsteps stopping at the door.

“I am fine. Just need to use the toilet.” I did my business, and the toilet cleaned me with warm air when I finished. I washed my hands and drank lots of water before I stopped and looked at my reflection in the mirror.

It was a nightmare. I was dirty; my hair was matted because I had only washed it with water over the past months and had had no access to a comb.
